Localization and Translation

Localization (sometimes shortened to 'l10n') is the conversion of a product (software, website, on-line help, documentation) from its source language to the target language in which the product will be used – which includes making it linguistically and culturally appropriate to the target culture.

Localization is much more than translation. Translation is just one aspect of the localization process. The localization process continues after the translatable parts of the product (e.g. software) have been translated. The translated text has to be imported back into the software application, graphics have to be adapted to suit the needs of the target language audience, changes to the user interface structure might have to be made, the software has to be tested, and a final QA must be performed.

If localization has been successfully implemented, then a Russian or Serbian purchaser will now own a product that they will perceive as having been developed and produced in their own country. The product may have originated and been exported from Poland, but the foreign purchaser will assume that it is a product of their own country. Localization is a tool that helps in the sale of the product.

From its extensive work in multi-language environments, AllWrite knows that a product must be highly attuned to the expectations of the target audience and those who influence that audience. To be successful, localization must pay particular attention to the age-range, language, and sub-culture of the audience, and to the nature of the product itself. A company that aims to export its products into foreign markets maintains at least a small localization steering team for the life-cycle of the product exportation.
